Light Up The Night With Christmas Spirit
WCEC is ready for twinkling lights and festive displays to transform our communities into winter wonderlands! If you plan on showcasing your creativity and holiday spirit by decorating your home and yard with dazzling lights and enchanting decorations, let us reward you for your hard work.
The WCEC Town & Country Christmas Lighting Contest offers cash prizes, is free to enter, and is open to everyone! Whether you prefer a classic look, a whimsical theme, or a modern twist, all displays are welcome!
Town & Country Christmas Lighting Contest
The Town & Country Christmas Lighting Contest has two categories:
- Town: Open to homes located within the WCEC service territory but not powered by WCEC. We award three cash prizes in this category—$100 for third place, $150 for second place, and $200 for first place.
- Country: Open to all homes powered by WCEC. In this category, we award cash prizes of $50 to two semi-finalists in each of our nine districts. Then, the judges will choose the top three winners from among the semi-finalists. These winners will receive an additional cash prize of $150 for first place, $100 for second place, and $50 for third place.
The display chosen as Best of Show earns an additional $200, making the total cash prize for the winning entry $400!
Judging is based on the overall design and appeal of your outdoor display. Members of our Board of Directors will judge on December 9 or 10, between 6 and 10 p.m., depending on the weather.
Entries can only win top prizes (First Place-Town, First Place-Country, Best of Show) once every three years.
Keep Safety In Mind
More than 800 home fires are caused by holiday decorations each year, so keep these tips in mind as you decorate:
- Carefully inspect all electrical decorations for cracked or damaged sockets and loose or exposed wires that can cause severe shock or start a fire.
- Use only outdoor-rated extension cords and decorations outside your home.
- Inspect extension cords for damage and discard (not repair) any that are not entirely intact.
- Never mount or support light strings in a way that might damage the cord’s insulation.
- Only plug outdoor electrical lights/decorations into circuits protected by ground-fault circuit interrupters.
- Never decorate near power lines. Keep yourself and your ladder at least 10 feet from power lines.
- Turn off all electrical decorations before leaving home or going to sleep.
- Avoid overloading electrical outlets with too many decorations. They can overheat and cause a fire.
Join us in celebrating the joy of the season and the magic of community as we light up our neighborhoods and spread cheer to all.
Let the festivities begin!
