Unclaimed Patronage Refunds

Wharton County Electric Cooperative is attempting to locate the following people (or their heirs) who received patronage refund checks in August of 2020. These checks were mailed to those listed below but were never cashed. The cooperative is aware that some of the members listed may be deceased. However, we are looking for surviving family members who are eligible to receive the patronage refund check. If you are on the list below or are the surviving spouse or legally-documented trustee/executor of a member listed, please contact WCEC’s Manager of Accounting at 979-543-6271.

What is a Patronage Refund? Wharton County Electric Cooperative is a not-for-profit organization. Money remaining after WCEC’s bills are paid each year is known as margins (it is the margin between income and expenses). This money is used for capital expenditures, such as building or replacing lines, and represents our members’ investment or equity in the company. In a for-profit company, this money would be called profit. In a cooperative, we call it capital credits because this money belongs to our members not to the cooperative. To be a true nonprofit cooperative, this money is returned to our members as a patronage refund. Patronage refunds are usually issued once every two years. The amount refunded is determined by our Board and is a percent of the total in each member’s capital credit account. Because refunds are generally based on patronage from past years, members may leave the cooperative or pass away before their refund is issued. In these cases, checks are issued using the last contact information for the member in our system. Many are returned or are not cashed due to outdated information. WCEC is attempting to locate these past members, or a surviving spouse or legally-documented trustee/executor for the member.
